Interchange

Visa and MasterCard have made lists of Interchange rates by card available. Interchange is the fee paid to each card issuing bank when a credit card is accepted and is based upon a percentage of the sale. Fees charged to each merchant are set by the Acquirer/Processor or Independent Sales Organization. These fees fees are usually based on one of 4 pricing plans, the overwhelming on Interchange Differential plans. Other plans include Interchange Plus, Tiered and flat rate.  It should be noted that  approximately 50% of the cards in circulation are “Qualified” cards, however this applies only to cards where the transaction is face to face with the card present.

Interchange Differential charges a flat rate for each sale, a differential based on the difference between the rate for a basic consumer card processed electronically,  1.42% for Visa and 1.49% for MasterCard. Then an Non Qualified fee is added for any card not processed with the card present, non consumer or non basic (rewards) cards.

Interchange Plus is simply the interchange rate plus a set percentage. Enhanced Interchange Plus has two percentage one for “qualified” cards and one for “non-qualified” cards.

Tiered Plans charge one fee for “Qualified, “Mid Qualified” and “Non Qualified” which card fits into which bucket is determined by the Processor.

Flat Rate plans charge the same rate for all cards.
